State officials say a firm which provides home and respite care to elderly and disabled patients has sent a mass layoff notice ahead of the company’s planned shutdown.
GeminiCares notified the Department of Workforce development that it will be ending operations at the end of May. The closure will mean 701 people will be losing their jobs. More than 170 of the workers affected are in Stevens Point, Adams and Neillsville in central Wisconsin. About 100 of the jobs are in the Milwaukee area.
The state will be using Dislocated Worker Program resources to provide assistance to the workers, companies, and communities affected by the layoffs. That group will also help workers with their preparation for new jobs and the job search process.
GeminiCares said that a few continuing contracts will need to be handled through July, but at that point they will be transferring their patients to other facilities.
