A proposal to allow a 70 mile per hour speed limit in Wisconsin is on the move again.
The chair of the Senate Transportation Committee has indicated there’s a compromise that will allow the proposal to advance. The deal would stop the state Department of Transportation from authorizing a 70 mph speed limit on sections of highways with cross traffic. The move addresses concerns from Senators that faster speeds could lead to more accidents on highways that have at-grade crossings.
Republican state Representative Paul Tittl (R-Manitowoc), the sponsor of the bill, said many routes would still qualify for faster driving under the amendment. He added that it could actually allow the DOT to set higher speed limits on more roadways that previously expected, since it would apply any four-lane highway with entrance and exit ramps.
A Senate committee is scheduled to vote on the bill Thursday at the Capitol. If approved by the full chamber, it would go back to the Assembly, which would have to sign off on the changes.
