A state Senate committee has scheduled a public hearing on legislation that could increase speed limits on Wisconsin roadways.
The Senate Transportation Committee will hear public testimony next Tuesday on the bill, which would allow the state Department of Transportation to set a speed limit of up to 70 miles an hour on portions of the interstate system. The proposal quickly passed through the state Assembly earlier this session, but so far has seen little movement in the Senate.
The legislation stalled in Senate last session, amid concerns that higher speed limits could make Wisconsin roads unsafe. Backers argue several other states have already made the change though, without seeing any major impact on safety.
