The Fond du Lac County Board is renewing its support for a troubled project to expand Highway 23 to four lanes between Plymouth and Fond du Lac.
The Board on Tuesday approved a resolution calling on the Department of Transportation to continue fighting for the expansion, which has been tied up since 2011 by a legal battle. The group 1,000 Friends of Wisconsin filed a court challenge to block the project, arguing state and county officials did not follow proper procedures in approving the work.
County Supervisor Dean Will said those challenging the project in court do not have the best interests of area residents in mind. “They may say they’re a thousand Friends of Wisconsin, but they’re not friends of Fond du Lac County.”
Will, a former captain with the sheriff’s department, says he’s seen firsthand how dangerous the stretch of road can be. He lost a cousin in an accident on the highway, and responded to numerous calls there. The road was also the scene of a multiple vehicle accident last week, which injured five people. Will asked “how much more carnage before this gets done?”
