Menasha’s police chief says the Fox Cities community showed a great deal of character over the past year, following a tragic shooting on the Trestle Trail.
One year ago today, 27-year-old Sergio Valencia del Toro randomly shot four people on the bridge over Little Lake Butte des Morts.
Thirty-three-year-old John Stoffel of Neenah, Stoffel’s 11-year-old daughter Olivia, and 31-year-old Adam Bentdahl of Appleton were killed. Thirty-two-year-old Erin Stoffel was shot three times, and she survived.
Del Toro then shot and killed himself.
Chief Tim Styka says the shooting shocked the community, but people rallied around the victims. He says the resolve that everyone showed in the weeks and months afterward, to support the families, was really overwhelming.
He says the response to the shooting also showed the value of having departments train together for crisis situations.
