The University of Wisconsin-Madison has suspended the Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity from all school activities until November first. The student-led Committee on Student Organizations found the chapter violated the Student Organization Code of Conduct by creating an environment that was discriminatory.
According to a statement from the university, the committee found that the fraternity did take action in response to certain complaints of the member, but those actions were insufficient to improve the overall environment. Sigma Alpha Epsilon can appeal the suspension.
A student complained in early March that Sigma Alpha Epsilon fostered a hostile environment since 2014. The investigation found that frat members used racial, anti-gay and anti-Semitic slurs. The committee said the frat responded to some allegations, but not enough to improve the “overall environment.”
