Picture taking gawkers slowed traffic at the scene of a fatal traffic accident in I-41 in Fond du Lac Tuesday, and Fond du Lac County Sheriff’s Captain Rick Olig said they were lucky there wasn’t a secondary accident. Olig said officers even spotted some passengers steering cars so that their drivers could snap pictures of the scene where a 24-year-old man was killed.
“We actually had to put a tarp up so they could remove the victim from the vehicle, because of all the people taking pictures” Olig said. “The family (of the victim) doesn’t deserve that. They deserve dignity and respect.”
Olig said if there had been a secondary accident it would have been extremely difficult to respond to. “It’s completely unsafe, and there’s no reason for it. If we had resources . . . we could actually stop those people and issue citations for inattentive driving.”
Joseph Wegner of North Fond du Lac was the driver killed in the three-vehicle accident on I-41 south of State Highway 23. He was driving a flatbed tow truck that was hauling cars. It ran into the back of a semi that had slowed down when the minivan in front of it stopped for construction. Wegner died at the scene. Two people were killed in a three vehicle accident in nearly the same spot less than two weeks ago.
