The Green Bay Packers went looking for long snapper help and signed former Purdue Boilermaker Jesse Schmitt on Tuesday. Mike McCarthy said the Packers were trying to add some competition to the position, where Rick Lovato started Training Camp as the teams only long snapper.
Schmitt had been waiting to find a job in the NFL since he graduated from Purdue in 2014. But Schmitt’s chance in Green Bay would appear to be over just as fast as it started. During practice on Tuesday night, Schmitt suffered a broken hand.
If the Packers weren’t totally satisfied with Lovato once, one would expect them to look for more competition again.
Still waiting for work is former Packers long-snapper Brett Goode. He suffered a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee in the Packers Dec. 20 game against Oakland. Goode finished the game but underwent surgery a week later.
It’s only been eight months since Goode’s surgery, but perhaps the Packers will consider giving him a call. Goode said he’s back to full health and a number of teams have shown interest in him.
Goode would love to see the Packers give his agent a call, but long snapper jobs are hard to come by in the NFL. Goode can’t play favorites at this point, if some other team calls first.
