Red Cross volunteers from northeastern Wisconsin are on their way to Louisiana, to help people impacted by historic flooding in Baton Rouge that has killed at least seven people and forced up to 10,000 people to stay in shelters over the weekend.
Steven Hansen, executive director of the Red Cross’s northeast Wisconsin chapter, says people from Waupaca and an Oshkosh volunteer left Monday, while up to 50 from the state could be on the way by later this week. He says volunteers act quickly when they get the call to help. “It’s just amazing how they can make themselves available,” Hansen says. “They know through their training, and past experiences, that anything can happen at the drop of a hat.”
Hansen says it’s the organization’s largest mobilization since Hurricane Sandy hit the northeastern US in 2012.
