Last month was the safest August on record for the state since World War II.
The state Department of Transportation says 50 people were killed in traffic crashes in the state last month – the lowest total for an August since the 1940s. There were 14 fewer deaths compared to last year and 15 fewer than the five year average.
Despite the drop, agency officials noted the total for the year is still nine percent higher than 2015, with 387 deaths from January through August.
