Talgo is returning to Milwaukee. Mayor Tom Barrett announced Monday that the Spanish train maker plans to do work on a $73 million contract for the Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority at its idled Milwaukee facility. The contract calls for overhauling 38 heavy rail vehicles with an option to overhaul another 36 more.
The exact number of jobs that could mean is unclear. Barrett made the announcement during his address on his proposed 2017 budget.
Talgo was selected to build trains for a high-speed rail line between Milwaukee and Madison, but Governor Scott Walker canceled the project after he was elected in 2010. Talgo settled a lawsuit with the state last year over two trains the company manufactured to run between Milwaukee and Chicago.
