Brillion’s mayor is reacting to news that one of the city’s largest employers is closing by the end of the year. Metaldyne Performance Group bought Brillion Iron Works two weeks ago. It was announced Monday night that the company is closing the foundry, ceasing molding and melt operations in the fourth quarter of 2016. The decision will impact 293 hourly and 49 salaried employees.
Mayor Gary Deiter says he was shocked by the news. He says his office was planning to meet with the new owners to talk about the company’s future needs. Now he says the conversation will be quite different.
Deiter says there are other major companies in Brillion that are hiring, but he says the loss of Brillion Iron Works will hurt a lot of people.
Metaldyne Performance Group said the existing Brillion business will be transferred to MPG casting plants in Browntown and Reedsburg in Wisconsin along with plants in St. Cloud, Minnesota, Iron Mountain, Michigan and New Castle, Indiana.
