Wausau East High School is hoping that they’ve found a solution to their football program woes.
The Wausau School Board will vote on a resolution next month (Oct. 10) to go independent with its football program.
East Activities Director, Greg Harvey, says that it wouldn’t be the end of their association with the Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletics Association (WIAA).
“Wausau East’s request is to go independent for football only, which would remove us from the Valley Football Association for football, Harvey said. We would remain in the Wisconsin Valley Conference for all other WIAA sports.”
The school would be responsible for setting their own nine-game schedule every year. Harvey says the move to go independent was made because the WIAA already denied the school from moving to the Great Northern Conference, which he says would have been a safer and more competitive option for the students.
“We are consistently the smallest school in our conference,” said Harvey. “We are having a very difficult time putting the kind of numbers out within our football program that can help support our team’s ability to compete at a high level against some of the best teams in the state of Wisconsin.”
“The WIAA’s ultimate decision was based on the fact that moving us would put the other football teams in the Valley Football Association in a compromised position when it came to scheduling.”
Wausau East football was winless in their 2015 campaign, and this year’s team is 0-6. Harvey expects the full school board to support the decision to go independent.
