Transgender bathroom policies will come back up for debate during a special Wausau School Board meeting. The meeting hasn’t been placed on the district schedule yet, but officials have said it will happen in early October.
Wausau’s school board is not bound to its’ policy of allowing students to choose the bathroom of the gender they identify with because of a federal court ruling blocking a rule from the U.S. Office of Civil Rights. The Office asked that schools change their policies or risk losing federal funding.
However, a different federal judge has also blocked the Kenosha Unified School District to force one of their students to use the girls’ bathroom, citing Title IX which bars sexual discrimination in schools. That lawsuit is still ongoing.
Wausau’s board hasn’t made a decision yet, but they will welcome public opinion at an upcoming meeting in early October. The next regular school board meeting is October 10th.
