UW-Whitewater Heads To Losers Bracket

Number 1 seed Saint Thomas defeated UW-Whitewater 5-3 in a NCAA Division III Regional Matchup of two 1-0 teams on Thursday.  St.  Thomas took the lead with an unearned run in the 4th and added an insurance run in the 8th inning to move to 2-0 in the Regional.  Colin Grove went 4 2/3 innings for UWW and was hung with the loss.  For St. Thomas Dylan Thomas threw 8 inning to pick up the win.  UW-Whitewater will play rival UW-LaCrosse on Friday at 10am in an elimination game.  Saint Thomas, 36-8 overall and 2-0 in the double elimination regional, will play at 4:00 Friday against an opponent TBA.

UW-LaCrosse Sends North Park Home At DIII Regional

UW-LaCrosse stayed alive in the NCAA Division III Baseball Regional with a 4-2 win over North Parkon Thursday afternoon.  Cole Cefalu went 2×3 with a pair of RBI to lead UWL’s offense.  LaCrosse put up a single run in the 3rd, two more in the 4th and an insurance run in the 7th to keep their season alive.  Garrett Scray gave up two runs in the 4th and 9 hits to earn the complete game win.  The WIAC champs will face the loser of  UW-Whitewater and St. Thomas on Friday morning at 10am in another elimination game.  That game will be at 10am on Friday.

Green Knights Stay Alive In DIII Baseball Regional

St.Norbert College stayed alive at the NCAA Division III Regional at Whitewater this morning with a 5-0 win over Concordia-Chicago.  The Green Knights put up 4 runs in the 2nd and added another run in the 5th inning.  Josh Honzik threw the complete game shutout giving up 9 hits, walking 3 and striking out one. St. Norbert will play the loser of tonight’s game between St. Scholastica and Aurora on Friday at 1pm.

UW-Eau Claire Names Siverling Men’s Basketball Coach

UW-Eau Claire has hired Matt Siverling as they new men’s basketball coach.  Siverling will become just the 10th head coach in Blugold men’s basketball history.  He will replace Kyle Green who coached just one year at Eau Claire.  Siverling spent the last two seasons as the head basketball coach at UW-Superior where the Yellow Jackets went 29-24 overall and 14-18 in WIAC play.  He served as an assistant for the men’s basketball team inEau Claire from 2004 to 2007.  He was also the women’s golf coach in 2004 and 2005.  The Ladysmith native is also a 2002 graduate of Eau Claire.

Brewers Have Problems In Houston

The Astros pounded the Brewers 8-3 on Wednesday night.  Houstonroughed up Brewers starter Randy Wolf for 7 runs in just four innings of work to take the series opener.  Carlos Lee went 3×4 with a homer and 3 RBI to pace the Astros attack.  Corey Hart’s solo homer in the 4th and Jonathan Lucroy’s 2 run triple in the 9th accounted for the Brewers only runs on the night.  Bud Norris struck out 9 in 7 innings worth of work to notch the win.  The series wraps up tonight as Shaun Marcum takes on JA Happ.

The Brewers re-signed pitcher Claudio Vargas to a minor league contract on Wednesday.  Vargas pitched for the Brewers in 2007 and then again in 2009 and 2010.  This season he had been pitching in the Mexican League.  Vargas will be assigned to Triple-A Nashville. 

Brewers outfielder Carlos Gomez went 0×3 with a run scored in a rehab stint with the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers on Wednesday night.  Gomez is scheduled to play for the T-Rats through Saturday inAppleton.
