Budmayr to miss spring practice

Another setback for Wisconsin quarterback Jon Budmayr.  Less than a year after undergoing surgery to address nerve problems in his right elbow, Budmayr is experiencing similar problems in the elbow and is expected to miss all of spring practice.

Budmayr will be a redshirt sophomore this coming season.  He missed the entire 2011 season.

The Badgers will have just two healthy quarterbacks when they open spring drills.  Joe Brennan was the No. 2 quarterback behind Russell Wilson last season.  He’ll help lead the Badgers during spring workouts.  Curt Phillips, who has missed the last two seasons recovering from knee injuries, is also expected to be on the practice field this spring.

Joel Stave is a third quarterback in the mix.  He’s a walk-on from Whitnall high school and is scheduled to redshirt this coming season.

Taylor joins consensus player of the year Draymond Green (Michigan State), Robbie Hummel (Purdue), Jared Sullinger (Ohio State) and John Shurna (Northwestern) on the coaches’ first team.

The media voters put Penn State guard Tim Frazier on the first team ahead of Taylor.

Taylor finished 7th in the Big Ten in scoring (16.3 ppg).  He led the Badgers to a 12-6 Big Ten mark (4th place) and an overall record of 23-8.

Gophers knock Badgers from women’s Big Ten Tourney

The Wisconsin Badgers basketball season came to an end in the opening round of the women’s Big Ten Conference Tournament in Indianapolis.

After a start that saw 10 lead chances and three tied scores in the first 10 minutes, Minnesota put together a 14-0 run to take a 31-18 lead with 3:31 remaining in the first half of play.

A pair of free throws by Morgan Paige with 2:29 left in the half ended Wisconsin’s scoring drought, but the damage had been done and the Badgers were unable to recover.  The Gophers went into halftime with a 39-23 lead.

Wisconsin shot a season-low 27.5% from the field and 25% from three point range.

The Gophers meanwhile hit 50% from the field and 55.6 % from 3-point range.

Fifty of the Gophers’ 81 points came from in the paint.

Taylor Wurtz was the only Badgers in double figures with 13 points.  She also added 5 rebounds.

The Badgers wrapped up their first season under Bobbie Kelsey with a 9-20 record.  Wisconsin finished ninth in the Big Ten at 5’11.

Badgers host Gophers tonight

The 14th ranked Wisconsin Badgers can’t afford to let up now.  Coming off of a

63-60 win over Ohio State in Columbus on Sunday, the Badgers are back home to host Minnesota at the Kohl Center tonight.

Wisconsin (21-8, 10-6 Big Ten) is looking to lock down 4th place in the Big Ten standings, which will earn them a first round bye in the upcoming Big Ten Tournament.

Minnesota is headed in the opposite direction.  In fact, since the Badgers beat the Gophers 68-61 in overtime in the Twin Cities on Feb. 9th.  Since that game, the Gophers have lost four more in-a-row, which makes for a 5-game losing streak.

Minnesota (17-12, 5-11) lost at home to Indiana on Sunday.
