Phillips powers Reds past Brewers in series opener

Cincinnati’s Brandon Phillips turned in a spectacular defensive play and followed it with a long home run to lead the Reds to a 4-3 win over the Milwaukee Brewers on the series opener at Great American Ballpark on Friday night.

Phillips had a runs coring single off of Yovani Gallardo (3-2) early on.  Then with two Brewer runners on base in the top of the 7th, Phillips fielded Ryan Braun’s ground ball up the middle, tagged second base with his left knee and threw to first from his knees to turn the double play.  He followed in the bottom of the 7th with the game winning home run as the Reds won for the fifth time in the last seven games.  Cincinnati is 14-6 at Great American Ball Park, the most home wins in the majors.

The Brewers got solo home runs from Jean Segura and Ryan Braun but lost for the 7th time in eight games.  Brewers pitchers gave up 8 hits and walked 9 Cincinnati hitters.  Starter Yovani Gallardo made it through just four innings, allowing 5-hits and throwing 100 pitches.

Carlos Gomez saw his hitting streak end at 14-games, going 0-for-4 and grounding into a double play.

Game 2 of the series is this afternoon (3:10pm).  Hiram Burgos (1-0, 3.00) pitches for the Brewers.  Matt Latos (3-0, 2.23) goes for the Reds.

The Rangers were supposed to have yesterday off, but they played a makeup game in Chicago against the Cubs and lost 9-2.

The loss ended Milwaukee’s 9-game win streak over the Pirates and prevented the Brewers from pulling out a 3-game sweep.

Rookie right-hander Hiram Burgos worked seven solid innings, allowing just 4 hits and two runs with one walk and six strikeouts.

Axford has pitched just 11 1/3 innings and has given up 6 home runs.  That’s just 4-home runs shy of his entire total last season.  Axford left to a chorus of boos at Miller Park.

Carlos Gomez continued his hot hitting for the Brewers, collecting two hits and a home run.  Yuniesky Betancourt also homered in the loss for the Brewers.

Yovani Gallardo (3-1) started slow, allowing a run in the 1st, but he settled in, pitching a season-high seven innings.  He allowed 2 runs on 3 hits while walking 2 and striking out 5.

Brewers win streak snapped at 9-games (AUDIO)

The bats went quiet last night in San Diego as the Brewers fell to the Padres 2-1 at Petco Park.  The loss snapped Milwaukee’s 9-game winning streak which was the longest since the Brewers won 10-straight in August of 2003.

Milwaukee ran into a buzz-saw on the mound in the form of Padres starter Edison Volquez (1-2).  Volquez pitched 7-shuout innings allowing just 5-hits for his first win of the year.  Brewers starter Marco Estrada (2-1) was solid despite taking his first loss of the year.  Estrada went 6 2/3 innings surrendering 2-runs, only 1-earned, on 5-hits.  His biggest blunder was surrendering a long ball to San Diego’s Carlos Quentin.  Brewers Manager Ron Roenicke was pleased with Estrada…
