DNR sets up texting tip line

Hunters hit the woods this weekend, and officials with the Department of Natural Resources are hoping they’ll lend a hand in watching out for possible lawbreakers.

The DNR has added texting as an option for reporting hunting violations this year. Steve Sisbach with the Bureau of Law Enforcement says members of the public can text information to TIP-411. That’s in addition to the existing 1-800-TIP-WDNR number already in use. [Read more...]

Buy it where you burn it

As deer hunters make plans for trips next weekend, the Department of Agriculture, Trade, and Consumer Protection wants them to leave the firewood at home.

The upcoming start of the gun deer hunt means wood-burning stoves at many cabins will be getting some use this weekend. Mick Skwarok with DATCP is urging those traveling to pick up firewood after reaching their destination, in order to help limit the spread of the emerald ash borer. [Read more...]

DNR eyes floodplain buyout

Residents of a Portage area neighborhood are expected to return home today, after they evacuated on Sunday when part of a levee broke on the Wisconsin River. Meanwhile, the state DNR says it will make a second effort to buy out more than 100 homes in Blackhawk Park area, and allow the levy to deteriorate.

Will the levee hold?

After reaching a record high the Wisconsin River is expected to begin dropping, meantime the state DNR says continues to monitor a weakened sand levee.  There was a partial breach in the levee on Sunday near the Columbia County community of Portage.

Sport fishing groups want trap net action

Sport fishing groups are asking for restrictions on commercial netting in Lake Michigan. Used to harvest whitefish on Lake Michigan, the trap nets off the Two Rivers, Manitowoc and Sheboygan harbors have long been a contentious issue with sport fisherman. It came to a head in June off Sheboygan when a sports fishing boat became entangled in a commercial trap net and capsized. One man drowned, two others were rescued by the Coast Guard. “When the trap nets were set in those vicinities of heavy sport fishing, it was obvious that this was going to happen,” says Chuck Weier with the Wisconsin Federation of Great Lakes Sports Fishing Clubs. “Unfortunately if nothing is done, it will happen again.” [Read more...]
