Jennings to meet with Vikings today

ESPN’s Adam Schefter is reporting that Green Bay Packers’ free agent wide receiver

Aaron Rodgers & Greg Jennings

Greg Jennings will pay a visit to Minnesota Vikings headquarters today.

Jennings has stood by and watched as Mike Wallace, Danny Amendola and Wes Welker have all landed lucrative deals.  That also means Jennings original asking price of $12-million a year has dropped considerably.

The Vikings wide receiver position is in transition after hey traded disgruntled Percy Harvin to the Seattle Seahawks and released Michael Jenkins.

The Vikings ranked 31st in passing last year under Ponder and 24th in the NFL in passer rating (81.2).  He passed for 2,935 yards and 18 touchdowns with 12 interceptions.

The Packers would like to have Jennings back, but at their price.  We’ll see if gets out of Minnesota with a deal today, or if the Packers will still remain in the picture.

The Green Bay Packers were reportedly discussing a three-year contract with free agent running back Steven Jackson on Wednesday.  A deal with Jackson was actually part of an ESPN tweet Wednesday afternoon but that tweet was quickly deleted.  Jackson was a thousand-yard rusher (1,042 yds) last season with the St. Louis Rams, averaging 4.1-yards per carry.  He’s rushed for 1,000 yards or more in eight straight seasons and averaged around 45 catches a year during his career.

There doesn’t appear to be a lot of interest for Jackson.  Besides the Packers, the Atlanta Falcons are the other team that have shown interest in his services.  He turns 30 in July and is nearing 2,400 carries (2,395) for his career.

Meanwhile, free agent wide receiver Greg Jennings entered free agency on Tuesday, looking for a deal that would pay him in the neighborhood of $12-million annually.  After missing 11 games over the last two seasons with injuries, Jennings isn’t drawing any interest at that price.  It’s expected he’ll eventually land a deal that will pay him about half of his original asking price, somewhere between 6 and 7-million annually.

The Packers could sign both.  If they do, it would likely trigger more cuts to create more cap space with extensions for Aaron Rodgers and Clay Matthews looming.

Jennings headed for free agency

When the dust settled on Monday, the Green Bay Packers were one of 24 NFL teams that didn’t use a franchise or transition tag on any of their soon

to be free agents.  That means, despite rumors to the contrary, Greg Jennings will hit the free agent mark next week and be free to negotiate with any NFL team.

Players can begin negotiating with other NFL teams on March 9, but they can’t sign a contract until March 12 (3pm CT).

Had the Packers used the franchise tag on Jennings, it would have cost them $10.5-million next season.  That $10.5-million would have counted against the Packers salary cap and eaten up nearly half of the nearly $22-million cushion that they’ve built.

Jennings is seeking a deal that would pay him $12-million or more per season, making him one of the top players at his postion in the NFL.

Jennings was hit by the injury bug in 2012.  He finished with 36 catches for 366 yards and 4 TD’s in 8-regular season games.

If Jennings does sign elsewhere, the Packers would bring back Jordy Nelson, James Jones and Randall Cobb as receivers with considerable experience.  There’s also a good chance that they’ll bring back tight end Jermichael Finley for the final year of his contract, which is due to pay him $8.25-million dollars for the upcoming season.

Saturday’s loss could be it for Driver & Jennings in Green Bay

As the Green Bay Packers’ cleaned out their lockers at Lambeau Field on Sunday, the players knew that for some, it would be the last time they’d

be going through the season ending routine in the spacious Packers locker room.

For 37-year-old Donald Driver, a decision on retirement has to come first.  Does he want to play on or is he content with 14 NFL seasons, all with the Green Bay Packers.

Driver hasn’t factored into the Packers offensive game plan for much of the season.  He caught just 8 passes for 77 yards and 2 touchdowns.

Driver is the franchise’s all-time leading receiver, catching 743 passes for 10,137 yards and 85 touchdowns.  Yet based on his usage this season, it’s unlikely that the Packers would ask him to come back.  So now he has to contemplate whether he wants to play for another team if the opportunity arises, or call it quits.
