Green Bay’s season ends in conference tournament

The Green Bay Phoenix picked the wrong time to see its 5-game win streak come to an end.  The Phoenix saw their season come to an end in the opening round of the Horizon League Tournament, falling 77-60 at Youngstown State.

The Penguins hit 8 first-half 3-pointers and cruised to the first round tournament victory. 

It’s the second straight season the Phoenix (15-15) made a first round exit from the conference tournament. 

Sophomore Alex Brown scored 20 points (9 of 14 FG) and was the only Green Bay player to reach double figures. 

Green Bay entered the tournament with 5-straight wins and victories in 8 of their last 10 games.  The Phoenix failed to post a winning record for the second straight season.

Horizon League men’s tourney tips off tonight

The men’s Horizon League basketball tournament tips off with four opening round games.  Following are the four first round games. 

(10) Loyola at (3) Detroit  6pm
(7) Green Bay at (6) Youngstown State 6:05pm
(9) Illinois-Chicago at (4) UW-Milwaukee 7pm
(8) Wright State at (5) Butler 6pm

The winners of tonight’s four opening round games will advance to round two on Friday night.

 

Cerroni sparks Phoenix to 3rd straight win

Kam Cerroni hit 5 of 8 from distance and finished with 17 points to lead the Green Bay Phoenix to a 71-67 win over Cleveland State in Horizon League men’s basketball action.

The Phoenix (13-14, 8-8 HL) won their 3rd straight and 6 of their last 8 overall and finished with a 12-2 record at home this season.  The Phoenix also kept their hopes alive of returning to the Resch Center next Tuesday night to host a Horizon League Tournament Game.

Down 62-60 with 4:10 to play, Green Bay scored 9 of the next 11 points. 

The Phoenix, in the midst of four games in eight days, will return to action Thursday night at Loyola before concluding its regular season Saturday at 1pm at UIC.  With wins and some help, Green Bay has a chance to finish in the top-six in the Horizon League standings and host a first-round tournament game next Tuesday at the Resch Center.

Green Bay plays final home game tonight

The UW-Green Bay Phoenix close out their home regular season at the Resch Center against Cleveland State tonight. 

The Phoenix look to keep the momentum rolling.  They’ve won two straight and 5 of their last 7 overall.  At stake is a Horizon League tournament home game.  Green Bay currently resides in 7th place in the league with two games left in the regular season.  The Phoenix needs to climb into the 6th spot to secure a home playoff game.

Green Bay will be trying to avenge a 10-point loss at Cleveland last month.

 

Men’s Horizon League results

Double-doubles from Brennan Cougill and Keifer Sykes led Green Bay to a 71-65 Horizon League win over Youngstown State at the Resch Center.  Both players scored 17 points each.  Alec Brown added 14 for the Phoenix in the win. 

Green Bay improves to 11-14 overall and 7-8 in Horizon League play.

In Milwaukee, Tony Meier hit two free throws with 1.1 seconds left to give the UWM-Panthers a 86-84 win over Cleveland State.  Meier finished with 15.  James Haarsma led the Panthers with 25.

Milwaukee is 16-12 overall and improved to 9-7 in Horizon League play.
