Wilson among leaders at Colonial

David Toms fired a bogey-free 8-under-par 62 to tie for the first round lead with Chez Reavie at the PGA‘s Colonial in Texas on Thursday.  It was Toms who lost in a playoff just a week ago to K.J. Choi in the Players Championship.

Wisconsin native Mark Wilson shot a 5-under par 65 and trails the leaders by 3-shots heading to round 2 today.  Madison’s Jerry Kelly is 10-shots off the lead after his first round 2-over-par 72.

Masters Update!

Two Wisconsin golfers are in the clubhouse, finished with their first rounds at The Masters, golf’s first major of the season. 

Jerry Kelly fired an opening round 2-over par 74 and Mark Wilson just finished his opening round, going 4-over par with a 76.

Steve Stricker’s first round is just underway.  He’s at even par through 5 holes.

Rory McIlroy is the leader at 7-under par 65.  Retief Goosen is 2-shots back at 5-under par through 16 holes.  Matt Kuchar is at 4-under par through 14 holes, 3-shots off the lead.

Wisconsin’s Mark Wilson is at 4-over par through 13 holes.  Steve Stricker just started his opening round.

Rory McIlroy is the leader on the course at 5-under par through 12 holes.

Ross Fisher and Brandt Snedeker are the clubhouse leaders, after opening round 3-under par 69′s today.

Tee times of note for “The Masters”

The 2011 Masters, golf’s first major of the season, starts tomorrow (Thursday).

The three Wisconsin golfers in the field have the following Thursday-Friday tee times.

Jerry Kelly - 7:07am & 10:14am  with Camillo Villegas & Jeff Overton

Mark Wilson - 8:13am & 11:31am  with Martin Laird & Bo Van Pelt

Steve Stricker - 11:53am & 8:24am  with Fred Couples & Luke Donald

Other groupings of note are Rory McIlroy, Rickie Fowler and Jason Day at 8:24am & 11:42am.  #1 ranked Martin Kaymer, along with Lee Westwood and Matt Kuchar at 9:19am & 12:26pm.  Tiger Woods, Graeme McDowell and Robert Allenby at 9:41am and 12:48pm.  And defending champion Phil Mickelson goes off with Geoff Ogilvy and amateur Peter Uihlein at 12:48pm and 9:30am.

Wilson wins, locks up spot in Masters field

Menomonee Falls native Mark Wilson shot a final-round 67 to finish the PGA’s Sony Open in Hawaii at 16-under-par 264 to win the event and put himself in the Masters field April 7-10 in Augusta, Georgia.  Wilson edged Tim Clark and Steve Marino by two strokes.

Wilson’s 3rd-career victory was worth $990,000 and earns him a tw0-year PGA Tour exemption.

Wilson shot bogey free golf over the 36-hole finale on Sunday. 

Fellow Wisconsin golfers Steve Stricker and Jerry Kelly of Madison both tied for 9th place at 10-under-par 270.  Stricker finished 68-66 over the final two rounds.  Kelly shot 69-66.
