Republican candidates meet in first debate

There was little disagreement to be had between the two candidates seeking the Republican nomination for governor, as they met Friday in their first debate before the September primary.

Neumann property tax plan raises concerns

A plan for Republican Gubernatorial candidate Mark Neumann to let property taxpayers switch to a monthly payment plan is raising concerns from some local government officials.

City of Madison Comptroller Dean Brasser says the proposal, which would allow taxpayers with a mortgage to stop using escrow and pay their taxes directly to municipalities, has some legal implications because it could require mortgage agreements to be completely rewritten. Brasser says escrow is typically used to guarantee the taxes on a mortgaged property are paid on time. [Read more...]

Giving property taxpayers a year off

Many homeowners typically pay their property tax bill using escrow, with a monthly installment included in their mortgage payment to help settle the bill in December. A Republican candidate for governor wants to give them another option.

The proposal from former Congressman Mark Neumann would give property owners the option to switch to a monthly payment plan directly to their municipality, starting in 2012. If they agree to the change, Neumann wants to give allow them to keep all of the money they owe on their 2011 tax bill. [Read more...]

Neumann turns in nominating papers (VIDEO)

Another Republican candidate for governor is officially on the ballot for the September primary.

Former Congressman Mark Neumann on Friday dropped of his nomination papers at the Government Accountability Board in Madison. Despite his opponent being endorsed by the state Republican Party, Neumann says he still filed as a GOP candidate because it puts him in a position to work more closely with the Legislature. Neumann wants to undo smoking ban

Wisconsin’s workplace smoking ban is barely a week old…but it wouldn’t last much longer if a Republican candidate for governor has his way. Former Congressman Mark Neumann says the smoking ban is a case of “government overstepping where they should be” and he’ll to repeal the measure if he’s elected governor.

Neumann says he’s not a fan of smoke-filled rooms, so the ban is desirable to him, but that doesn’t make it acceptable. He says business owners and citizens should be able to make their own decisions. For the people who get sick around cigarette smoke, Neumann says they should just find another place to go.
