Blue leaving Marquette early for the NBA

Junior guard Vander Blue said today that he’s forgoing his final year of college basketball eligibility at Marquette and will enter the NBA draft.

The 6’4 Blue plans to sign with an agent.

The Madison, Wis. native earned All-Big East Second Team honors in the process.  He finished the season ranked 14th in the Big East Conference in scoring (14.8 ppg) and also topped the roster in that category.  Blue shot 45% from the field and 75% from the free throw line.

Blue started 80 games during his career at Marquette.  He finished with 982 points.

Anderson leaving Marquette

Juan Anderson wanted to be closer to his family in Oakland, California, so the Marquette forward asked to leave the program and was granted his release on Monday.

Anderson becomes the second player in a week to leave the team.  Freshman forward Jamal Ferguson of Virginia also left the team.

Anderson was a part of the rotation and a starter for a good portion of the season.  He played 13 minutes a game averaging 2.7 points and 2.9 rebounds a game.

Anderson told the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, “I really enjoyed my time here and learned a lot that will be beneficial to my life after basketball.”  “My family is very important to me and moving closer to them is something I need to do at this time.”

Buzz Williams has reason to dance

It’s been a long week for Buzz Williams and in the end, he had reason to dance.

While the Golden Eagles were in Lexington, Kentucky, battling the likes of Davidson and Butler, Buzz Williams’ wife was hospitalized with a ruptured appendix.  Williams was at his wife’s (Corey) side, kept close eye on his two sons, 9-year-old Calvin and 6-year-old Mason and at the same time, coaching his basketball team to wins over Davidson and Butler.

Marquette had to come from behind to win both games and advance to the Sweet 16 for the 3rd straight year, something that hasn’t been done before at Marquette.

So when it was done, Williams felt like dancing.  He said he shouldn’t have done so, but given everything he’s had to deal with, that dance was a well deserved one.

Marquette headed back to NCAA “Sweet 16″

The Marquette Golden Eagles are headed back to the NCAA’s Sweet 16 for the 3rd straight season.  The Golden Eagles squeaked by Butler 74-72, avenging a 1-point loss to the Bulldogs earlier this season.

Butler’s Rotnei Clarke, who beat the Golden Eagles at the Maui Invitational back in November with a three-point shot, this time tried again and missed everything.

Vander Blue had 29 to lead Marquette in the win.  They’ll take on the winner of Sunday’s game between Illinois and Miami next week.

Davidson mistake in final seconds gives Marquette NCAA victory

The Marquette Golden Eagles came from six points down with 70 seconds left to play to beat the Davidson Wildcats 59-58 in their NCAA men’s basketball tournament opener in Lexington, Kentucky.

Davidson led by one in the final seconds and turned the ball over.  Marquette inbounded with 6.7 seconds left, got the ball to Vander Blue, who drove and scored the game winning basket with 1 second left to play and sent the Golden Eagles on to victory.

Marquette (24-8) moves on to face sixth-seeded Butler on Saturday in a rematch that saw them lose to the Bulldogs back in November in Maui.

Marquette struggled from beyond the arc, 1 for its first 12.  Then, when the Golden Eagles needed it most, Jamil Wilson made a three-point shot with a minute to play.  Vander Blue hit another with 27.8 seconds left and Wilson made yet another, with 10.9 seconds left to play.
