Tavecchio to give Crosby some competition

It’s been five years since the Green Bay Packers carried more than one kicker on their roster.  That run came to an end Tuesday when the team signed lefty kicker Gorgio Tavecchio to a deal to give some competition to incumbent Mason Crosby.

Crosby is coming off his worse seasons as a Packer.  He connected on just 63.8% of kicks, well under his career average of 76.8%, and his 12-misses were 2nd most in the NFL behind David Akers.

Tavecchio spent training camp last season in San Francisco where he was signed as undrafted free agent out of CAL.  He appeared in three preseason games making his only field goal attempt and booting a pair of extra points before being released as the 49ers went with David Akers.  Tavvecchio is CAL’s 5th all-time leading scorer.

Crosby is up for now

that Mike McCarthy didn’t want to take any chances with him on Sunday.  Why else would the coach pass on a field goal opportunity on 4th and 2 from the Titan 24 yard line with 8:49 left to play.  Surely, up 49-0, they didn’t need the touchdown.

“We were in the four-minute offense,” said McCarthy.  “We were running out the clock.  I thought about it but I was more concerned with running out the clock.”

Earlier, Crosby hit a 26 yard field goal and a 48 yard field goal that hit the right upright and bounced in.

The fans sarcastically cheered Crosby’s good fortune on this day.  Sarcastic?  That’s what I suggested to the coach after the game on Sunday and he laughed.  He said he couldn’t tell the difference between sarcastic cheering and regular cheering. [Read more...]

Crosby’s problems continue with Packers

title, kicker Mason Crosby was trying to shake off another disappointing day.

Crosby’s kicking slump continued, with misses from 43 in the second quarter and 42 yards in the fourth quarter.

If the Packers are entertaining a kicking change, they’re not letting on.  After the game, Mike McCarthy sounded like a broken record, delivering the same message that he’s delivered before.

In between misses, McCarthy decided to go for it on fourth down rather than try a field goal.  The Packers converted the 4th down play and they later scored on the drive to make it 21-7 Green Bay.

Crosby is now 17 for 29 this season, converting just over 58% of his field goal tries.

Will the Packers make a change?  If they do, it’ll likely be moving Crosby to kickoffs and signing a kicker to take over on field goals.  We’ll see what happens this week, if anything!

Packers streak over Lions continues

The Green Bay Packers 27-20 win over the Detroit Lions on Sunday night,

Aaron Rodgers

extended their long run of success over the Lions.

Green Bay has now won an NFL record 22-straight games against the Lions at Lambeau Field.

It looked for a while like the Lions might end their long misery.  Detroit jumped out to a 14-0 lead when QB Matthews Stafford had the ball slip out of his hand.  Rookie DT Mike Daniels recovered the fumble, broke a tackle and ran 43 yards for a touchdown.

That was the turning point for the Packers.  From that point, the Packers comeback turned serious the outcome was about to be determined. [Read more...]

Packers have little confidence in their kicker at the moment

lined up Mason Crosby for a 48-yard field goal try.  Aaron Rodgers was headed off the field when Mike McCarthy called a play instead of opting for the 3-point try.  Rodgers pass fell incomplete and the Lions took over.

Crosby is trying to convince himself that the Packers sometimes go for it on fourth down, which they do.  But had Mike McCarthy had any confidence in his kicker, he would have went for the points on the road.

Crosby finally got his chance, late in the first half, from 50 yards.  He missed just right, but Lions coach Jim Schwartz had called time out.  With another chance, Crosby then pulled the next one to the left.

Then, Crosby had another chance to make up for the miss at the end of the half when he lined up from 38 yards with a chance to tie the game.  He pulled that one left as well. [Read more...]
