Badgers shoot their way out of the NCAA Tournament

It’s happened before, where the Wisconsin Badgers couldn’t throw the ball in the lake if they were standing right next to it.  They simply picked

the worst time of the year to do it again.

The Badgers, who made the Sweet 16 in each of the last two seasons, were knocked out of the 2013 tournament in the opening round, falling to Mississippi 57-46.

Many thought the Badgers had a favorable bracket and were headed for a deep run in the NCAA’s post-season, but the Rebels had other ideas.  Bo Ryan’s Badgers lost in their first tournament game for just the second time in his 12-seasons as head coach at Wisconsin.

Marshall Henderson scored 19 points and Murphy Holloway added 10 for Ole Miss.

Freshman Sam Dekker scored 14 points for Wisconsin, which hit just 8 of their 36 three-pointers (22.2%) and 15 of 59 shots overall (25.4%).

The Badgers got plenty of open looks, but they just couldn’t convert.  Wisconsin led 25-22 at halftime, but they were uncharacteristically sloppy with the ball.  Their 9-turnovers in the half matched their average for a game. [Read more...]

The Badgers jumped out early, going on a 18-0 run during a 5-minutes stretch of the first half to jump out and never look back.

As hot as the Badgers were, the Buckeyes were that cold.  They hit just 3 of their first 17 shots from the field. [Read more...]

Consistency on offense has been a problem for the Badgers this season.  Especially at the free throw line where Wisconsin is at 61% for the season and 52% in the Big Ten, which ranks last.

Badger big man Jared Berggren said they certainly didn’t expect the free throw shooting slump to last this long.

Even those that shoot it well, didn’t last night.  Jared Berggren entered the game last night, hitting nearly 76% of his free throws, but managed to make just 2 of 8 last night.

Wisconsin’s season long shooting slump continued for much of the game.  The Badgers shot 38% from the field, 17.6% from three-point range and 50% from the free throw line, yet still held off the Nittany Lions for their 10th win (10-4, 1-0) of the season.

Ryan Evans, Jared Berggren and Ben Brust all scored 13 points and Mike Bruesewitz added 12 for the Badgers. [Read more...]
