Doug Melvin

enshrinement into the Canadian Baseball Hall of Fame.  Induction ceremonies will take place on Saturday, June 23rd.

Melvin will be joined by Rusty Staub, Rheal Cormier and the Canadian baseball team that won the 2011 Pan Am Games Gold Medal.

Melvin is dubbed as Chatham, Ontario’s second most famous baseball man, behind Hall-of-Famer Fergie Jenkins.  The Brewers general manager since 2002 had a brief pitching career in the minor leagues from 1972-78 with Pittsburgh and the New York Yankees, followed by administrative jobs including baseball operations assistant with the Yankees in 1983-’84, scouting director with the Yankees in 1985, special assistant to Roland Hemond in 1987 with the Baltimore Orioles, assistant GM and director of player personnel from 1988-’93 with the Orioles, and then landing his first general manager’s job from 1994-2001 with the Texas Rangers. Brewers sign Patterson to minor league deal

The Milwaukee Brewers added some outfield depth by signing veteran Corey Patterson to a minor league contract.

Patterson split the 2011 season with Toronto and St. Louis, hitting .239 with 6 home runs and 36 rbi’s in over 133 games.  He played for the Brewers in 2009 for 11 games, going 1 for 14 with seven strikeouts.

Patterson was not invited to the Brewers’ spring camp but could still see time in exhibition games.  He’ll likely start the year at Triple (A).

Fielder: Good things come to those who wait

It took awhile, but former Milwaukee Brewers slugging 1st baseman Prince Fielder has a free agent deal with the Detroit Tigers.

Prince Fielder

Fielder signed a 9-year deal worth $214-million.

It’s the fourth richest contract in Major League Baseball history, behind the previous deals signed by Alex Rodriguez with the Rangers and then the Yankees, as well as the deal Albert Pujols got from the Angels this offseason.

It was thought that the Washington Nationals had the inside track, but Fielder instead is headed for Detroit.

The Brewers will get compensation in the form of a first round draft pick from the Tigers, number 27 in the upcoming draft.  The Brewers own the 28th pick already and they’ll also get a supplemental first rounder.

Fielder’s deal will average $23.8-million, just shy of the $24-million per season that the Angels will pay Pujols.

The Tigers became a player when they lost DH Victor Martinez to a torn ACL.

but the Milwaukee Brewers installed the 2011 National League Central Division Champions pennant at Miller Park this morning.

The club invited the media to snap some pictures at Miller Park this morning.

Baseball season isn’t too far away.  Brewer pitchers and catchers report Feb. 19th and hold their first workouts the next day.   Position players report on Feb. 24th and with the first official workout scheduled for the following day.

Brewers sign pair of relievers, sign Aoki

The Milwaukee Brewers reached one-year deals on Tuesday with relievers Francisco Rodriguez and Kameron Loe, avoiding salary arbitration.

Rodriguez agreed to an $8-million contract and Loe’s deal is worth $2.175 million.

The Brewers have two players remaining that are eligible for arbitration, starting pitcher Shaun Marcum and reliever Jose Veras.

The Brewers also signed Japanese outfielder Norichidka Aoki.  He gets a 2-year deal with a club option for 2014.
