Southern Wisconsin pounded by storms

Southern Wisconsin was hit hard by storm activity that including a stretch of tornadoes, thunderstorms and flooding late Thursday afternoon into the evening.  Six-to-eight tornadoes were reported throughout the state from Ridgeway to Racine County.

“So far it seems like damage from tornadoes have been relatively minor. Most of the damage seems to be from the flooding,” said Wisconsin Emergency Management spokesperson Lori Getter. The National Weather Service is sending out survey teams to determine if there were any tornado touch downs, and assess possible damage. [Read more...]

GAB won’t roll over for bad ballot language

The Government Accountability Board has rejected a candidate’s questionable statement of principle on the November ballot. Ieshuh Griffin, an independent legislative candidate from Milwaukee, argued that the phrase NOT the “whiteman’s b***h”, should have been allowed to appear under her name on the ballot. “I’m stating that in my point of view, the average politician is a token,” said Griffin. “And, a b***h is not a person, it’s a dog, a female dog that rolls over.” Griffin said the politicians who’ve represented her part of Milwaukee have done nothing but roll over. “I’m stating that I’m not going to be a roll over. It’s specifically geared towards the demographics that I’m hoping to represent,” she said. [Read more...]

“American Idol” in Milwaukee

Aspiring stars hoping to land a spot on the show “American Idol” are lining up in Milwaukee this week, and it could bring a boost to the city’s economy.

Registration for auditions on the hit TV show are scheduled for Wednesday of this week, with registration going on through the end of Tuesday. David Fantle, a spokesman for VISIT Milwaukee, says all of those hopefuls will need to stay somewhere, and that could bring up to $1 million into the local economy. [Read more...]

Medical College, Milwaukee consortium land $20 million NIH grant

The National Institutes of Health has made a $20 twenty million, five year grant to The Medical College of Wisconsin and a Milwaukee-wide medical research partnership. Dr. Reza Shakar with the Medical College is also director of the Clinical and Translational Science Institute of Southeast Wisconsin. Shakar says the collaborative effort brings synergy to the process of advancing biomedical research, patient care and education. “We all brought different talents that were complimentary to each other,” Shaker says. Marquette University, the Milwaukee School of Engineering (MSOE), the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee (UWM), the BloodCenter of Wisconsin, Children’s Hospital and Health System, Froedtert Hospital, and the Zablocki VA Medical Center are the other participants in CTSI. “Each bring unique capabilities, talents and resources to the institute.” [Read more...]

Hundreds hit Milwaukee for youth games

Hundreds of young athletes from around the country descend upon Milwaukee for the US Youth Games. USYG General Manager Russell Thomas says the event was started in the early 70′s by then Mayor of New York John Lindsay as way for inner city youngsters to compete with their counterparts from other parts of the country.
