NLCS edge goes to the Cardinals

Albert Pujols went 4 for 5 with a 2-run homer, three doubles and five rbi’s to lead the St. Louis Cardinals to a 12-3 win over the Milwaukee Brewers.  The Cardinals banged out 17-hits in all, pulling even with the Brewers in the series 1-1.

The edge in the series now belongs to the Cardinals, who will host the next three games in the series, starting with game 3 on Wednesday night at Busch Stadium. [Read more...]

Marcum leads Brewers past Cubs

The Milwaukee Brewers inched closer to their first division title in 29 years by beating the Chicago Cubs 5-1 at Wrigley Field on Tuesday night.

Shaun Marcum threw eight strong innings, allowing 1-run on 5 hits with no walks and 7-strikeouts to pick up his 13th win (13-7) of the season.  Marcum also helped his own cause when he doubled and scored a run.

Rickie Weeks drove in two runs and Nyjer Morgan reached base three times, stole a base and scored two runs to help the Brewers reach 91 wins for the first time since 1992.

The Brewers magic number fell to 3, any combination of Brewer wins or Cardinal defeats totaling 3, will clinch the National League Central division.

The Brewers aren’t playing like division leaders

To say you’re worried would be admitting that there’s a problem.  So the Milwaukee Brewers are all pretending to not be worried about the team’s recent slide, a slide that has seen them drop 6 of their last 8 and see their lead in the NL Central fall to 5 1/2 games over the St. Louis Cardinals.

With 12-games left, the Brewers magic number to clinch the NL Central remains at 8 after a 6-2 loss to the Colorado Rockies at Miller Park on Wednesday night. [Read more...]

Carpenter shuts down Brewers

The St. Louis Cardinals are extreme longshots to overtake the Milwaukee Brewers in the NL Central, but they’re not going down without a

fight.

Chris Carpenter tossed a 4-hit shutout as the Cardinals blanked the Brewers 2-0 at Busch Stadium in St. Louis yesterday.

Rafael Furcal provided the offense for St. Louis with a solo home run.  The win, coupled with Atlanta’s loss to Philadelphia, pulled the Cardinals within 6 1/2 games of Braves for the wildcard lead in the National League.

Carpenter was 1-2 with a 5.68 ERA in three previous starts against the Brewers this season.

The benches emptied in the 9th after Carpenter struck out Nyjer Morgan and Morgan threw his tobacco in Carpenter’s direction.  Morgan was restrained by teammates and eventually ejected.  Carpenter then retired Ryan Braun and Prince Fielder to complete the shutout.

Morgan said Carpenter yelled an expletive at him, which is what caused the problems in the 9th.

The Brewers return to Miller Park tonight to open a 4-game series against the Phillies.  Chris Narveson faces Cole Hammels in the pitching matchup.

Brewers bang out 17 hits in win over Pirates

The Milwaukee Brewers got their offense rolling early, scoring 7 runs in the

second inning and going on to beat the Pittsburgh Pirates 11-4 at P-N-C Park in Pittsburgh.

Casey McGehee capped off the 2nd inning outburst with his 10th home run of the season.

Former Pirate Nyjer Morgan had 4 hits, 2 runs and 2 rbi’s and catcher Jonathan Lucroy added 3-hits to support pitcher Marco Estrada.  Estrada held the Pirates to 2-runs through 7 innings as he beat Pittsburgh for the 2nd time in 11 days.

The Brewers have taken 2 of 3 in the series and shoot for the series win later this morning (11:35am start) in the finale.
