runs on the board in the 8th, 9th and 10th innings yesterday to come from behind and beat the St. Louis Cardinals 4-3 in 10-innings.

Jonathan Lucroy’s 10th-inning home run turned out to be the game winner, but Lucroy’s heroics wouldn’t have come had it not been for Ryan Braun’s 2-run homer in the 8th inning.

It’s all in the way the wind blows!

Monday was not a normal April day in Chicago.  Normally the wind at Wrigley Field

is blowing in and the temperatures are low.  Yesterday, with the wind blowing out and the temperatures respectable, the Milwaukee Brewers scored 4-runs in the 1st inning and held off the Cubs 7-4.

The wind that helped the Brewers get the lead, changed directions late and helped them pull out the win.  With the bases loaded full of Cubs, Starlin Castro’s 2-out drive would have at the very least, hit the wall with the wind blowing out.  But blowing in, Castro’s drive turned in to a fly ball out and Jim Henderson earned his first save of the season. Brewers losing skid hits 5 (Audio)

One week into the 2013 Major League Baseball season and the Milwaukee Brewers

John Axford

John Axford

are probably thinking about how grateful they are that the season is 162 games long.  Because six games into the current campaign and the Brewers are just 1-5, riding a 5-game losing streak.

The fifth loss in that stretch came yesterday as the Arizona Diamondbacks beat the Brewers 8-7 in 11-innings.  Menasha, Wis. native Eric Hinske clubbed his 8th career pinch-hit home run off of John Axford in the 11th to win it.

The Brewers scored twice in the bottom of the 9th to force extra innings.  Axford came on to work a perfect 10th inning, then served up a double, followed by Hinske’s home run to get saddled with the loss. [Read more...]

Colorado bats stay hot, beat Brewers

The Colorado Rockies scored 3-runs in the 7th inning last night, breaking a 4-4 tie and going on to beat the Milwaukee Brewers 8-4 at Miller Park.

The Rockies got to Brewers starter Marco Estrada for 4-runs and 9-hits in the first five innings.  Troy Tulowitzki and Carlos Gonzalez each clubbed home runs, giving manager Walt Weiss his first win as a major league manager.

Brandon Kintzler struck out the side in the sixth, then came trouble for the Brewers.  Michael Gonzalez took his turn on the mound, walking the leadoff man, giving up a bunt single and then watching as the Brewers couldn’t get an out when Carlos Gonzalez  bat exploded, sending the barrel into the air and Alex Gonzalez for cover. Brewers beat Rockies in extra innings

The Milwaukee Brewers won their season opener today but needed extra innings to pull it off.  Jonathan Lucroy’s 1-out, bases loaded sacrifice fly

Miller Park

in the 10th inning gave the Brewers a 5-4 win at Miller Park.

The Brewers actually trailed 3-1 in the 8th but scored three runs to take a 4-3 lead.  Ryan Braun drove in a run with an infield single and Aramis Ramirez followed with a 2-run double to put the Brewers in front for the first time.

John Axford came on to preserve the win, striking out the first two batters he faced in the 9th.  Then Dexter Fowler clubbed a solo home run to right with 2-outs in the 9th inning to force extra innings and hand Axford his 1st blown save of the season.

In the 10th, Rickie Weeks was hit by a pitch, stole second.  Then Ryan Braun was intentionally walked and Aramis Ramirez followed with another walk to load the bases for Lucroy, who delivered the game winner.

Yovani Gallardo gave up 3-runs on 10-hits in 5-innings and was in line for his 3rd opening day loss but his teammates got him off the hook.

Norichka Aoki homered in the 3rd for the Brewers.  Troy Tulowitski and Carlos Gonzalez also went deep for Colorado.

The win snapped a four-game opening-day losing streak for the Brewers.
