Big 6th inning lifts Cardinals past Brewers

Jake Westbrook allowed one run over six innings for his 100th career victory and the St. Louis Cardinals held on to beat the Milwaukee Brewers 6-5 in their series opener at Miller Park on Thursday night.

The Cardinals scored all 6-runs in the 3rd inning, then held the Brewers off late to win.

Westbrook left with a 6-1 lead for the bullpen to protect, but the Cardinal bullpen would make it interesting.  The Brewers scored twice in the 7th and once each in the 8th and 9th innings to cut the lead to one.  That was all the closer the Brewers would get.

Wily Peralta suffered the loss, falling to 2-2 with a 6.00 ERA.

The Brewers had their chances, but finished 1 for 8 with runners in scoring position.  They stranded 13 base runners in all.

Game 2 of the series is tonight.  Here’s the pitching matchup:

Milwaukee Kyle Lohse (1-2, 2.53 ERA) vs. St. Louis Shelby Miller (3-2, 2.05 ERA).

Brewers open big series in St. Louis tonight (Video)

The Milwaukee Brewers (2-6) will be well rested as they head into tonight’s series opener in St. Louis against the Cardinals (5-4).

As bad as things seem in the first week and a half, the Brewers are just 3-games behind division leading St. Louis and Cincinnati.  But their offense has been inconsistent, and their pitching has been worse.

If there’s a bright side to the setup for the Brewers, they’ll have their top 3-starting pitchers going in the series.  Kyle Lohse (0-0, 1.50 ERA) starts the opener tonight against the Cardinals Shelby Miller (1-0, 3.38 ERA).  Lohse won 16 games for the Cardinals last season before signing with the Brewers a week before the season. additional $1 million in incentives.  The 34-year-old Lohse posted a 16-3 record and a 2.86 ERA for the Cardinals last season, pitching a career-high 211 innings. He has a career 118-109 record and 4.45 ERA in 12 seasons with Minnesota, Cincinnati, Philadelphia and St. Louis.

Lohse declined a $13.3 million qualifying offer from St. Louis over the winter. The Brewers will give up the 17th pick in the upcoming June draft, along with the bonus money that Major League Baseball allots to that spot.  The Cardinals will receive an additional compensatory draft choice — the 28th overall pick.

Because his signing is so late is spring training, it is unclear when Lohse will be ready to make the starting rotation for Milwaukee.

It’s expected that Chris Narveson will have a spot in the starting rotation locked up, joining Yovani Gallardo, Lohse and Marco Estrada.  Either Wily Peralta or Mike Fiers will grab the 5th spot in the rotation with the other likely headed for the bullpen.

Brewers hold on to beat St. Louis 4-3 (AUDIO)

It wasn’t the prettiest win, but the Brewers will take it.  Milwaukee had to hold on for a 4-3 win over the St. Louis Cardinals Wednesday at Miller Park.  The victory gave the Brewers the series 2-1, their 6th straight series win at Miller Park.

All four of Milwaukee’s runs came in the first inning with the help of the Cardinals defense.  St. Louis committed 3-errors and the Brewers had only 2-hits in the inning.  Corey Hart had the big knock, a 2-rbi single.  In the game, the Milwaukee had 5-hits as a team with 3 of them belonging to Aramis Ramirez.

Tyler Thornburg made his 2nd career start as he took the place of Zack Greinke in the rotation.  Thornburg labored through 4 2/3 innings allowing only 2-runs on 4-hits while striking out 5 against 4-walks.  Both of his runs came off home runs.  Thornburg has allowed 7 long-balls in 12-innings this season.

Wolf gets first win since April, Axford loses closer job

Randy Wolf’s streak of 13-starts without a victory came to an end Tuesday night as the Brewers knocked off the St. Louis Cardinals 3-2 at Miller Park.  The last time Wolf earned a win was April 30th.

Wolf lasted 6 2/3 innings allowing 2-runs on 8-hits with 6 strike-outs.  He left the game in the hands of Jose Veras with 2-outs in the 7th and runners on 2nd and 3rd.  Veras got Cardinals SS Rafael Furcal to pop ending the threat.  Manny Parra struck-out a pair and gave up nothing in a scoreless 8th frame.  Francisco Rodriguez had a shaky 9th allowing a couple of hits but got out of the jam and notched his 2nd save of the year.  Rodriguez wanted to make sure Wolf got the win…
