Stricker takes aim at the Shell Houston Open

The PGA Tour tees it up for one final tournament before next week’s Masters.  The Shell Houston Open begins Thursday in Humble Texas.  Phil Mickelson is the defending champion.

Steve Sticker is the lone Wisconsin golfer in the field.  This will be Stricker’s fifth event this season having last played in the WGC-Cadillac Championship at Doral March 8th through 11th.  In his 4-tournaments in 2012, Stricker has made the cut 4-times with a trio of top-10 finishes and win at the Hyundai Tournament of Champions in January.  He is slated for an 8:00 AM tee-time Thursday morning.

Mark Wilson will also be in the Masters Field this year.  In 10-events this season, Wilson has made 8-cuts with a win in the Humana Challenge in January.  Wilson currently is 4th place in this years Fed Ex Cup standings.

Stricker closes in on first title of the golf season

Madison’s Steve Stricker never did get comfortable during the 3rd round of the Tournament of Champions in Hawaii on Sunday.

Just when it looked like Stricker was going to allow everyone back in the hunt again, he birdied the final four holes to finish with a 4-under-par 69 and maintain his 5-shot lead heading to the final round today.  That 5-shot cushion is the same cushion that he started the round with.

Stricker takes 1st round lead at PGA Championship

With the first round of the PGA Championship more than half way complete,

Steve Stricker

two guys from Madison sit atop the leaderboard.  Steve Stricker tied the lowest score ever shot in a major championship by firing a 7-under par 63 at the Atlanta Athletic Club.

Stricker had a chance to become the first player in the history of the majors to shoot a 62, but he missed a 10-foot birdie putt on hole #9.  He tapped in for a par and a 63.

Stricker’s good friend, Jerry Kelly, also from Madison, finished his round with a 5-under par 65.

In golf, two Wisconsin natives, Steve Stricker & Jerry Kelly finishing 1-2 after the first round of the PGA is like Christmas in August.  Now we’ll see if they both can stay atop the leaderboard again tomorrow, which would give them a chance to play together in round 3 on Saturday.
