Barrett responds to sewage ad

Milwaukee’s mayor says efforts to curb the dumping of raw sewage in Lake Michigan have made progress under his watch, despite an attack ad in the race for governor that claims otherwise.

Barrett, the Democratic nominee in the race for governor, says he’s worked to expand sewer system capacity from 400 to 500 million gallons. He says it would actually be able to handle even more  if Milwaukee County Executive Scott Walker, the Republican gubernatorial nominee, had not held up construction of a retention pond that would hold another 300 million gallons of water. President rallies UW students (AUDIO)

President Obama speaks on the UW-Madison campus.

In a speech that focused heavily on voters who supported him in 2008, President Barack Obama urged students at UW-Madison to return to the polls again this November to keep fighting for change.

An estimated crowd of over 17,000 people packed into Library Mall on the UW-Madison campus Tuesday evening to hear the President speak. Obama spent most of his 40 minute speech talking about the battles he’s fought since taking office nearly two years ago, and how Republicans have opposed him every step of the way. [Read more...]

Barrett and Walker to meet in first debate

The candidates for Governor square-off tonight in their first debate, ahead of the November election.

Democrat Tom Barrett and Republican Scott Walker expected to concentrate on economic issues in the meeting. UW political scientist David Canon says there’s unlikely to be many surprises in the encounter, since the debates are usually pretty structured. [Read more...]

Wisconsin voters have named Scott Walker the Republican nominee in the race for governor.

With nearly 57-percent of the vote, Walker won the GOP nomination in Tuesday’s primary election over former Congressman Mark Neumann. Walker thanked supporters rallying in Milwaukee for preparing him for what’s to come, noting that the primary has tested and made his campaign ready to take on the “liberals in Madison.” [Read more...]

Barrett says stem cell research needs support

A US District court ruling this week blocked federal funding for embryonic stem cell research, although the Justice Department is expected to appeal. Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett, the Democratic candidate for governor, hopes the decision will be overturned.

If it that doesn’t happen, Barrett says he’d do everything in his power as governor to keep stem cell research going in Wisconsin. He says that includes looking at opportunities for the state to support the industry. [Read more...]
