Hoffman reaches save milestone

The 2010 baseball season has been no picnic for Major League Baseball’s all-time saves leader.  Trevor Hoffman started the year needing just 9-saves to

reach 600 for his career.  No other player has every gone there.  But Hoffman struggled out of the gates and eventually lost his closers role.  Since then, he’s patiently played the waiting game, waiting for the chance to close again.

The  Milwaukee Brewers in the meantime, found a new closer in John Axford and his performance has been outstanding, making it harder for the Brewers to go back to Hoffman.

Hoffman eventually got some scattered opportunities and he’s made the most of them.

Hoffman got pinch-hitter Randy Winn to ground into a double play.  Another pinch hitter Aaron Miles then grounded the ball to shortstop and Craig Counsell who threw to first for the final out and the celebration was on.

Prior to the 9th inning, the game had four ejections.  One of the four was a fan, for heckling Cardinals catcher Yadier Molina.  The Cardinals missed an opportunity to gain ground on the first place Cincinnati Reds in the NL Central.  St. Louis still trails Cincinnati by 6-games.  The Reds suffered their 3rd straight loss on Tuesday night, 4-3 to Colorado.

Hoffman’s struggles continue, Brewers fall again

The Milwaukee Brewers losing streak has hit 3-games following the teams 6-4 loss to the Florida Marlins in Miami on Tuesday.

Trevor Hoffman, who had been so good a year ago for the Brewers, continued his recent struggles, surrendering 3-runs on a pair of doubles in the 7th inning as the Marlins broke a 3-3 tie.

Dave Bush settled down after allowing 3-runs in the first inning, but he had to leave after 6-innings because of a blister problem.

Hoffman fell to 1-4 and his ERA climbed to 11.65.  Prince Fielder and Corey Hart homered in the loss.  For Hart, it’s his 11th in the last 16 games and his 14th overall on the season.

5 Brewers pitchers combine to win

Five Milwaukee  pitchers, none of them in the starting rotation on opening day, combined to lead the Brewers to a 4-3 win over the Minnesota Twins, salvaging the final game of the series.

Manny Parra worked two scoreless innings to pick up his first win of the season.  Parra worked out of a jam in the 5th, facing runners at 2nd and 3rd with nobody out and getting out of it. [Read more...]
