Brewers need to find new closer

Whether Trevor Hoffman agrees to step down as the Milwaukee Brewers closer or management forces that decision, one thing is certainly clear, it’s time the Brewers find somebody else to close out games.

Hoffman blew his 5th save in the Brewers 5-4 loss to the Reds on Tuesday afternoon, sending the Brewers to their season high 8th straight loss.

Hoffman entered in the 9th, asked to protect a 4-2 lead.  But Hoffman allowed all five batters he faced to reach base.  Hoffman fell to 1-3 with a 13.15 ERA.  His 5-blown saves is one more than all of last year.

Ryan Braun homered in the loss.  The Brewers open a 2-game series in Pittsburgh against the Pirates tonight.

Brewers struggling to get Hoffman on track

The Milwaukee Brewers dropped their 2nd straight to the Pittsburgh Pirates, with Trevor Hoffman blowing his fourth save of the season.

Hoffman was on to start the 9th, trying to protect a 4-3 lead.  He served up a leadoff home run to pinch hitter Ryan Doumit and the Brewers eventually fell 6-5 in 14-innings.  Hoffman also served up a grand slam to Doumit in a Pirates victory the day before.  Hoffman has now allowed 6-home runs in his four blown saves this season. Hoffman blows 3rd save, Brewers fall to Pirates

Trevor Hoffman blew his 3rd save of the season and the Milwaukee Brewers fell to the Pittsburgh Pirates 7-3 at Miller Park on Tuesday night.

Ronny Cedeno tied the game in the 9th with a solo home run off of Hoffman.  The Pirates then loaded the bases before Ryan Doumit clubbed a grand slam home run to win it.

Late home run beats the Brewers

Nick Stavinoha’s 2-run pinch hit homer in the 9th off of closer Trevor Hoffman gave the St. Louis Cardinals a 5-4 come from behind win over the Milwaukee Brewers at Miller Park on Friday night.

The home run came in Stavinoha’s first plate appearance of the season.

It’s the first blow save of the season for Hoffman (0-1), who converted his first two save chances this season.

Matt Holliday also clubbed a 2-run homer for the Cardinals, in the 6th off of starter Dave Bush, to pull St. Louis to within one run (4-3).  Bush did a number on one of baseball’s best hitters, Albert Pujols.  Pujols went 0 for 3 with a strikeout.

Game 2 of the series is this afternoon.

Slow start for Davis, Brewers rescue their starter

Doug DavisDoug Davis spotted the Colorado Rockies 3-runs in the first inning, throwing 40 pitches in the frame.  The total damage was 4 runs and six hits with three walks in four innings, but the Milwaukee Brewers bullpen came to the rescue and the Brewers rebounded for a 5-4 win.

After losing the opener, the Brewers took 2 of 3 in the series.  For Davis, it was an ugly beginning, but he knew if he could minimize the damage, the Brewers would still have a chance.
