Rumpel earns WCHA honor

WCHA co-Rookie of the Week.

Rumpel earned his first collegiate shutout with a 36-save, 4-0 gem at Minnesota State last Friday, then went on to stop 29 of 31 shots on goal in a 3-0 setback to the Mavericks last Saturday.  One goal allowed was an empty-netter while the other two came on first period MSU power-plays.  For the series, Rumpel stopped 65 of 67 shots on goal he faced for a .970 saves percentage with four shutout periods.

Rumpel is now 7-5-2 with a 2.66 goals-against average, .915 save percentage and one shutout.

McCabe named WCHA Rookie of the Week

both proved to be game-winners as the Badgers skated to a 2-game non-conference sweep over RIT last weekend, has been named the Red Baron WCHA Rookie of the Week.

The Eau Claire, Wis.,  native scored both of his goals in the third period as Wisconsin recorded 6-3 and 2-1 victories over RIT on Jan. 6-7 at the Kohl Center in Madison. 

The freshman defenseman now has two goals and three points in nine games played.  He skated the first five games of the season for the Badgers before missing the next 11 due to an injury.

The Badgers are on the road this weekend, at Minnesota-State for the start of a 2-game series on Friday night.

 

Gamblers’ Eich headed to Michigan Tech

play college hockey at Michigan Tech of the WCHA.

Eick is in his second year with the Gamblers and becomes the 19th player on the 2011-12 squad to commit to an NCAA Division I hockey program.

Michigan Tech is currently ranked 15th in the country.

Wisconsin’s Rumpel is WCHA’s Rookie of the Week

the host Badgers to a 5-4 win over defending conference champion and No. 5-ranked North Dakota last Saturday night, has been named the WCHA’s Rookie of the Week.

The freshman from Swift Current, Saskatchewan, Rumpel came through with 38 saves in the Saturday evening contest at the Kohl Center in Madison, including 15 in both the first and second periods, and helped keep the Sioux scoreless on all four power-play chances as Wisconsin completed the sweep following a 5-3 victory last Friday.

Rumpel has been rotating the goalie duties with fellow freshman Landon Peterson.

Rumpel’s uncle, Roy Schultz, was an All-American goalie at the UW back in 1980.

Hockey Badgers earn 1st WCHA win

The Wisconsin Badger men’s hockey team captured its first WCHA victory of the season, knocking off No. 5/6 North Dakota 5-3 at the Kohl Center on Friday night.

Landon Peterson picked up his first career win in goal for the Badgers (2-3-0, 1-2-0 WCHA) with a 24-save effort. 

Mark Zengerle (1g, 1a) and Tyler Barnes (2a) had multi-point games for the Badgers. 

North Dakota (2-2-0, 0-1-0 WCHA) lost its first league game of the season.  The two teams plan the final game of the series at the Kohl Center on Saturday night.
