Deputy Rick Treadwell

A Dane County Sheriff’s Deputy has died due to COVID-19. Sheriff David Mahoney confirmed the death of 61-year-old Deputy Richard Treadwell.

Mahoney pleaded with the public to take the coronavirus seriously.

“I can’t be more clear. I wear a mask to protect the community that I serve, and I hope that the community I serve wears a mask.”

Treadwell died Saturday. Mahoney says he contracted the virus while working, and his is believed to be the first law enforcement on-duty death due to COVID-19. It’s also the first line of duty death in the Dane County Sheriff’s Office in 41 years. He’s survived by his spouse and three adult children.
