Mauston man outraces NASCAR veterans

June 28, 2006 By WRN Contributor

Mauston's 21 year old Kelly Bires outdueled a couple of NASCAR's top guns at the Madison International Speedway last night, taking the 100-lap feature in Tuesday night's all-star challenge. Fires held off Cambridge native Matt Kenseth during the final 11 laps to hold on and win. Kenseth, who won the 2003 Winston Cup title, and is currently second in the current Nextel Cup points standings, finished 2nd. Defending Nextel Cup champ Tony Stewart started 19th and finished 8th. Bires started 8th, moved to fourth halfway through and then led the final 36 laps for the win.
