Hayes leads the way at John Deere

July 14, 2006 By WRN Contributor

Appleton, Wisconsin native J.P. Hayes is the first round leader at the PGA Tour's John Deere Classic in Illinois. Hayes fired a 7-under par 64 yesterday, putting him in a 4-way tie for the lead. Hayes won the John Deere Classic in 2002 and he's off to a good start in 2006. He entered the tournament ranked 203rd on the money list and made the 36 hole cut just 3-times in 8-starts on the tour this year. Madison's Steve Stricker shot an opening round 3-under par 68. — Michelle Wie has a long way to go to make the cut. She shot a 6-over par 77, 13 shots off the lead, which puts her 149th in the 153 player field.
