Freak accident seriously injured driver

Champ Car driver Cristiano da Matta underwent emergency surgery to remove a ruptured blood vessel in his head on Thursday after his race car hit a deer that wandered onto the track during an open test session at Road America in Elkhard Lake. Da Matta was airlifted to Theda Clark Medical Center in Neenah. Da Matta was testing at Road America in preparation for the Sept. 24 race there. He finished 13th back in early June at the Milwaukee Mile.
