Governor pushes for more federal heating help

September 14, 2006 By WRN Contributor

A decision to provide home heating help to only certain states is drawing criticism from the Governor's office. Wisconsin and other Midwestern states were left off a list of recipients for $80 million in federal energy assistance. Stephanie Marquis, a spokeswoman for Governor Doyle, says they're calling on the Bush administration to re-think that decision by at least making an extra $22 million available to Midwestern states.

Marquis says most of the money is being sent to the East Coast, which has different heating concerns because they're based on heating oil. That's compared to most Midwestern states which use natural gas. Marquis says the assistance is vital for helping thousands of families stay warm.

Governor Jim Doyle and Michigan Governor Jennifer Granholm have sent a letter to the President, asking him to make more money available.
