Lawmaker wants transportation audit

September 29, 2006 By WRN Contributor

Representative Steve Nass wants the legislature's Road to the Future Committee to come to a stop — or at least slown down.

The Whitewater Republican says he was quite surprised in when, in August, the Joint Legislative Committee on Transportation Needs and Finance projected spending over $500 million for new roads. Nass notes there's been no in-depth audit of the state's transportation needs since 2003, and he wants the committee co-chairs, Senator Dan Kapanke and Representative Mark Gottlieb, to voluntarily agree to a Legislative Audit Bureau Review of the State Highway Program.

Nass says he initially suggested that the committee disband, until after an audit could be completed. Nass says the road building lobby has been “a major player” in the recommendation for new spending.
