Officials say terrible tragedy avoided in Green Bay

September 15, 2006 By WRN Contributor

Police on Thursday arrested 17-year-olds Shawn Sturtz and William Cornell, who are suspected of planning an attack on their high school. Green Bay Police Captain Lisa Sterr says items recovered from the homes of the teens included rifles, shotguns, and at least 20 improvised explosive devices. The two teens are in jail, although formal charges have not been filed.

Green Bay Mayor Jim Schmidt says the plan was uncovered after an unidentified student came forward. Schmidt says the city got lucky because a student had a conscience and told somebody what may happen. Schmidt is urging that student to take credit for being brave in a dangerous situation. Schmidt is among those questioning what role the teens' parents may have played. He's asked the D.A. to look into what action can be taken in this case.

Police say the teens may have just been one bad day away from launching their attack on the school.
