Who should pay for diversity on campus?

September 12, 2006 By WRN Contributor

A proposed tuition hike at one UW campus raises the question of who pays for diversity.

UW administrators want to raise tuition by 13-hundred dollars at the La Crosse campus to admit more students and provide more financial aid for more minority students.

Republican representative Rob Kreibich chairs the Assembly Higher Education committee. He thinks UW is going about diversity the wrong way by focusing on admitting more students. Kreibich says the focus should be on retaining more students and working to improve the graduation rate.

Graduating more students should be the goal according to Kreibich. And it shouldn't be done on the financial backs of students. He's afraid this could set a bad precedent of campuses raising tuition for what ever reason officials wish.

The governor still has to approve the UW La Crosse plan and so far Governor Doyle and his GOP challenger Mark Green are not backing the idea.-
