DNA testing in Wisconsin

October 18, 2006 By WRN Contributor

Questions about DNA testing at the state crime lab are a central issue in the State Attorney General?s race.

Both Democrat Kathleen Falk and GOP candidate JB Van Hollen say they will break up the testing logjam at the crime lab. If you're a county DA like Dane County's Brian Blanchard, how long does it take to get test results?

Blanchard says the lab does a fairly good job prioritizing cases by trial date and importance. But these days it's not just getting one sample from each case, police usually pick up several. If needed, test results can come back in weeks but Blanchard says a typical case will take six, eight even twelve months.

Blanchard says he can understand why there might be a bottleneck at the lab once you figure in the increased caseload and the thousands of samples coming into the lab from all 72 counties.
