Lawmaker predicts fight over Stewardship Fund

October 30, 2006 By WRN Contributor

A Wisconsin lawmaker expects a fight over the future of a state conservation program. State Representative Spencer Black (D-Madison) says a priority for the next legislature should be re-authorizing the Wisconsin Stewardship Fund. The Madison Democrat says it's been responsible for preserving some invaluable property for future generations to enjoy. The program has been used to purchase nearly a half million acres since it began.

Nearly $60 million a year is spent under the program and Black says he expects there to be a fight in the legislature over renewing it. Some lawmakers have tried to cut the size of the program in recent years.
