Tomah school gets rid of Indian name

October 20, 2006 By WRN Contributor

One more school in the state dumps their Indian name in favor of political correctness. An avid opponent of Indian mascots in our schools says he's thrilled Tomah School District was courageous enough to get rid of their Native American logo and mascot.

State Representative Frank Boyle (D-Superior) says he's been trying to banish these Indian mascots, symbols, images, logos and nicknames for about 15 years. He says people resist change because they identify with the school names they grew up with.

About 30 schools in the state still have Native American logos or mascots, and over 20 schools have voluntarily changed their names. Boyle says until all schools have dumped their offensive logos, he'll continue to reintroduce legislation banning such names. State Superintendent Elizabeth Burmaster had asked schools to voluntarily eliminate the use of such symbols.
