State observes Winter Awareness Week

November 13, 2006 By WRN Contributor

It's Winter Awareness Week in Wisconsin, and state officials are urging residents to prepare for any emergencies that can come with colder weather. Lori Getter is with Wisconsin Emergency Management says the annual campaign focuses on being ready for any winter-related issue that could impair safety, such as snowy-conditions while driving.

Getter says preparing for the winter months should include having a survival kit at home to help you ride out any serious storms. Those kits should include items such as a flashlight, bottled water, and non-perishable food.

Getter says Wisconsinites also need to remember to drive according to conditions during winter storms. There are nearly 17,000 vehicle accidents in the state each year during the winter months, with nearly 7,000 injuries.
