As polling places across the state expect low voter turn-out for today's primary, a state lawmaker wants to give Wisconsinites the day off to vote in future elections. A proposal from State Representative Josh Zepnick (D-Milwaukee) would allow Wisconsin voters to take the day off from work for November elections on even numbered years. Under current law, workers can take up to three hours off to go vote in the general election.
The Milwaukee Democrat says having a day off would encourage more involvement in the electoral process. Zepnick says having two-thirds of voters turn out for an election shouldn't be celebrated, as it currently is by many areas.
The lawmaker is not worried that some workers may take advantage of an Election Day holiday as just a free day off from work. He says plenty of people already take holidays off without necessarily observing the reason for them.
