Child care providers fighting proposed budget cuts

February 16, 2007 By WRN Contributor

Wisconsin Child Care providers rally at the Capitol against possible cuts from the Department of Workforce Development. Thousands of postcards sent by child care providers statewide were delivered to the Capitol Thursday. Dane County child care provider Silko O'Donnell was among those making the delivery. She says proposals from DWD could impact the quality of care given to thousands of children. Those proposals include a freeze in the state subsidy rate for providers, a 25 percent reduction in provider hours, and the implementation of attendance based pay.

Madison-area care provider Oma Vic McMurray says the industry is an unfair target for the state. Unionized providers say the state needs to modernize the way it treats the child care industry.
