Record special interest cash tied to elections

February 21, 2007 By WRN Contributor

A new report finds special interest money played a major role in last fall's elections in Wisconsin. An analysis by the Wisconsin Democracy Campaign shows a record $19 million in expenditures by interest groups in races for Governor, Attorney General, and the legislature. Director Mike McCabe says that's three times more than what was spent in the 2002 election.

McCabe says $15 million was spent under a "cloak of secrecy" with the public kept in the dark about who contributed the money. He says the spending contributes to an increasing isolation between politicians and ordinary citizens. [WIBA's John Colbert contributed this report.]
